Prep list for upgrading SWx and PDM 2020
With the recent release of SOLIDWORKS 2020 SP1.0, we thought it’d be a great time to review a PDM upgrade checklist of things that we highly recommend:
1. Review:
- Check that you know all the proper admin passwords for your systems.
- If you are going to use a SOLIDWORKS install image, then decide if you are going to include PDM install in your admin image.
- Verify that you are current on your SOLIDWORKS &/or PDM subscription.
- Verify your hardware and OS are up to the requirements from SOLIDWORKS. It is worth noting:
- Windows 7 is an obsolete product from Microsoft and SOLIDWORKS 2020 will not install on Windows 7.
- SOLIDWORKS License Manager nor PDM will install on Server 2012 or Server 2012 R2 since they are being discontinued by Microsoft.
- Clean-up the PDM recycle bin. Ideally clean out as much as you can from there.
- Check for user inactivity and for accounts that can be removed:
- Are there user accounts for folks that no longer work at your company?
- Are there users that have changed roles and no longer use PDM?
- Number of files checked out and nudge users to check-in their files. Ideally ALL files should be checked in before a PDM upgrade.
2. Backup: make sure that your data is safe and that you have scheduled backups at a cadence that makes sense for your business.
3. Advise the experts: upgrading your systems is a tedious and critical process for your business to operate smoothly.
